Finals week begins Monday, May 12, and students are starting their last minute cramming for all of their tests.

Although it is a hard time of the semester, the students I spoke with felt that their finals would come out successful.

“Finals shouldn’t be too bad,” John Hagert, a sophomore reclamation major, said. “Only one out of three of my finals include material from the whole semester.”

Some students felt the ease of the test depended upon how much they enjoyed the class.

Nicole Lenz, a junior english literature major, said that she likes her class classical mythology and believes that the final for it will be easy

“Physical Geology, on the other hand … well that is another story.”

Students will be finishing reading their chapters and doing their last assignments to get ready for the end of the semester.

Joshua Tipton, a freshman building construction management major, said that he is preparing for the finals a couple of different ways.

“I am going to be studying a lot and going to as many study sessions as I possibly can,” Tipton said. Tipton also said that he will feel comfortable and prepared.

Along with these study methods, Lenz said that she will also be taking part in discussions with people that share the same classes as her.

Laura Morgenson, a senior criminal justice major, said that she is not too worried about her finals.

When asked about the stress that finals are giving her, Morgenson said, “I could care less; they’ll be easy.”

Campus Crusade for Christ, an international group, became an official UW-Platteville organization last fall. It began under the supervision of Kyle and Bethany LeMieux, from the Madison Campus Crusade for Christ team, and Mike Glatzel, president of the organization and a building construction management major.

“We are using the same building model as we did at UW-Whitewater,” Kyle LeMieux said.

Kyle LeMiex said that the organization is now looking for key students that will really help the group create their foundation and help it expand.

“[At UW-Whitewater], we started with just a little over a dozen students. Now we have over 150 students who regularly attend our meetings,” Kyle LeMieux said.

Glatzel and Kyle LeMeiux both said that the organization, which currently meets Monday nights, is to be a “spiritual resource for students.” They do this by helping them better understand their relationship with Jesus Christ and by furthering their knowledge of the Bible and Scriptures.

“We want to aid students in their spiritual development,” Glatzel said.

Some things that they have done are bringing in a couple speakers, such as Badger’s wide receiver Luke Swan, and go to conferences.

“We went to a conference called Big Break. It was in Panama City during Spring Break,” Glatzel said. “We were able to share our experiences with the spring breakers there and hear theirs.”

What the organization is looking to do in the future is expand.

“We want to show more people how God is applicable in their lives,” Kyle LeMieux said.

Glatzel said that he hopes to see more involvement in the community.

According to their Web site, “The Campus Crusade ministry did not even exist a year ago, but with the gracious leadership from our awesome staff workers, Kyle and Bethany Lemieux, we have a group of students that faithfully meet every week to fellowship [sic] and to discuss ‘God’s word.’”

It is that time again, the time that students want to go outside and do something fun. One thing that many students here participate in is disc golf.

Graphic by Becky Ninneman and Randy Batz

Disc golf, sometimes called Frisbee golf, or frolf, is a disc game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association’s Web site, “The object of the game is to [complete] the course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc.”

In many ways disc golf is just like traditional golf. There are 18 holes; you go for the fewest strokes (or throws) and many of the rules are the same. One thing that makes students play disc golf more than traditional golf is the fact that the discs are relatively inexpensive compared to golf clubs.

“Disc golf is a fun activity and it’s a great way to stay in shape,” Derek Krouze, a sophomore software engineering major, said.

The UW-Platteville Disc Golf Course was built many years ago. Curt Fatzinger, intramurals director, said a few of the people that were involved in its construction were Gary Marquart, Troy Berchem, Lee Jobs, Dave Maahs, Harv Schwab, Dennis Palmer, Patrick Daniels and the UW-Platteville grounds and housing departments.

Jessica Krueger, a sophomore psychology major, said that recently the course underwent a few updates. Due to the new bridge and sidewalk built behind Glenview Commons, the teeing area for hole 18 had to be moved from its previous spot. Momentum Bikes, Sig Ep WI Theta and UW-P all sponsored new signs for each hole due to the fact that the previous ones had become illegible.

Due to the recent storm, many trees had either fallen onto the course or were leaning enough to obstruct play. The UW-P grounds department had to go remove the fallen trees and cut the others that were in the way, such as the one that was by the first hole.

“It is like playing on a whole new course,” Krouze said.

If a student is looking for something to do outside, disc golf is a great idea.

Retta has been on “Comedy Central Presents” and “Premium Blend.” She has also been in the movies “First Sunday,” “Dickie Roberts Former Child Star,” “Slackers,” “Sex and Death 101,” and “Fracture.”

Jon Hoffman, a junior engineering physics major, said before the show that he was excited to see Retta perform.

Retta began her act talking about her losing her things when coming to Platteville. She said she went to the mall in Dubuque to get some clothing and saw a JC Penney and a Sears, neither of which sold clothes that were large enough to fit her size.

“I saw all these biggies and fatties walking up and down the mall, and I was like ‘there is nothing here for you!’” Retta said.

Retta then went on to talk about the hotel soap being too small.

“You do not want to know where this soap can get lost on me,” said Retta.

Retta said being lazy is in her character. She said that she gets mad when the escalator is broken and temporarily becomes stairs.

“If I was going to be walking up and down stairs, I would have joined a gym,” she said. Retta even went on to say that she is known for sitting on an escalator while it is moving because it brings on a relaxing feeling.

Later in her act, Retta discused pregnancy and labor. Retta said she doesn’t want children because she sees her friends with kids acting crazy. However, Retta did say that if she was to go into labor, she would want to be drugged.

“Epidural, morphine, crack. I don’t care, I just don’t want the pain,” Retta said.

Towards the end of her show, Retta was talking about classical music and opera. She said that she could drive in urban areas with the windows up and it would sound like rap or hip-hop. Yet if she drove up to white people, and they thought she was listening to rap or hip-hop, she would roll down the window and sing along with her opera.

Sam Wakefield, a sophomore in software engineering, said that he was glad to come and see Retta perform at UW-P.

Each year many students participate in intramural sports on campus. UW-Platteville’s intramurals director Curt Fatzinger said intramural sports are a great way for students to get more involved with their campus.

Fatzinger said that intramural sports are a great way to meet new people. He said that in the past there have been more than 3,000 participants involved in basketball, broom ball, dodge ball, football, indoor soccer, racquetball and water polo.

Don Katzer, a senior physical education major, has participated in basketball and football and currently supervises indoor soccer on Sundays and is a referee for basketball and water polo on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He says that the winter sports are going great and everyone is getting along. The teams are competitive, social and they are making the games fun, Katzer said.

Eric Zoglman, a sophomore civil engineering major, has participated in indoor soccer, basketball, water polo and football.

“[Those sports] are fun and good, except sometimes the refs annoy me, but I guess that’s normal,” Zoglman said.

Although basketball, broom ball, indoor soccer, racquetball and water polo are already in season, according to UW-P’s intramurals Web page, football and dodge ball will have registration meetings at 7 and 8 p.m. on March 12.

Katzer said that the best part of intramural sports is the fact that students are getting out and being active while being competitive and having fun.

“They will help you lose all those pounds one gains from Glenview [Commons],” Zoglman said.

Fatzinger said that joining an intramural sport is a great way to relieve stress and the schedules are tailored to the student’s schedules. Each team only plays one game a week, so each team would get together and find out the best time for them to play.

If one is unsure whether or not to join an intramural sport, Fatzinger encourages students to join. As stated before, it is a great way to meet new people and you can stay in shape. Fatzinger also said that since there are different levels, students don’t have to be good at whatever sport you join.

“The only thing you have to lose is a few pounds and maybe some study time,” Katzer said.
