Totaling just five runs in four games, the Pioneers (3-15, 0-4 WIAC) were swept by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Saturday and Suday. Saturday’s first game was decided early after a seven-run second inning put the Pioneers in a hole they could not climb out of, losing 11-1. The second contest was a tough 3-0 loss for the Pioneers. Starter Shane Murphy had a solid outing, throwing seven innings of four hit ball, but five walks and a lack of run support sunk the effort. Sunday’s games began with a dominant pitching performance by the Eagles, who allowed just one hit and struck out nine en route to a 3-0 win. In the series finale, the Pioneer bats came alive, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Trevor Kattre, but the pitching staff faltered through an 11-4 loss. Starter Zach Ryan threw just three innings and gave up seven runs. The Pioneers return home for a doubleheader against University of Wisconsin-Stout today.
