Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia passionate about music
By Margaret Rick • March 25, 2010 • Category: UncategorizedPhi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is a music fraternity at UW-Platteville that has a house full of students who are passionate about band and choir.
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was founded in 1898 at The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and is a national professional fraternity. The Omicron Iota chapter was established as a chapter at UW-P in 1996. There are seven other chapters located around the state of Wisconsin and 224 active chapters nationally.
Many might wonder what makes each fraternity different from all other ones on campus. Phi Mu is different than other fraternities at UW-P because it is centered around a love for music.
Phi Mu does a lot of different philanthropy and fundraising work throughout the state of Wisconsin. Some of the charity work they have done include: Big Band, brother service auctions, singing at local nursing homes and Relay for Life.
Matthew Lemanski, senior music major, pledged in Spring 2007 and belongs to the Phi class. What Lemanski loves most about the fraternity is “brotherhood and being able to relate to them through music.” Lemanski decided to join because he knew a lot of guys that were already in the house.
“I never considered pledging a fraternity until a friend from high school, who is a part of Phi Mu, told me to come to some rush events,” junior history major Jean-Claude Bedard said.
There are 24 active members and two junior active members. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia does not have a sister sorority, but they do a lot of work with Sigma Alpha Iota. Sigma Alpha Iota is also tied closely to music. The GPA requirement to be a member of the fraternity is a 2.5 cumulative.
Joining Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is a way to stay involved with music, while continuing with education. For more information you can contact Jared Keehn who is president of the fraternity at keehnj@uwplatt.edu.
