On The Fly: Six runners qualify for nationals

Track and Field
UW-Platteville will send six athletes to the NCAA Division III nationals March 11-13 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
Ann Tank, sophomore, automatically qualified for the 800-meter championships for the women’s team. Tank qualified with a time of 2:11.92.
Sophomore Patrick Klein also automatically qualified for the 800-meter championships with a time of 1:52.63.
Freshman Matt Ziegler provisionally qualified for the 400-meter championships with 49.40. Ziegler broke the school record previously set by Michael Peplinski, 49.58, in 2003.
UW-P will also send the women’s 4×400-meter relay team featuring Tank and juniors Carshella Porter, Shea Bierman and Cassie Schneider. The team provisionally qualified with a time of 3:54.89.

Wrestling
Senior Jesse Milks grabbed his highest finish ever at fourth place during the NCAA Div. III national championships on March 6. The three-time All-American beat the nation’s number one wrestler at 157 pounds to clinch the fourth place spot.
This marked Milks’ 105th victory and topped his fifth place finish at last year’s nationals.
UW-P also sent sophomore Vinny Alber, wrestling at 165 to his first ever nationals appearance. Alber fell 7-4 to fourth-seeded Michael Morris of Southern Maine. Alber fell 7-1 in the consolation bracket.
Alber finished the season 29-5.

Baseball
The UW-Platteville baseball season opened against Greenville, Ill. on March 5. The Pioneers fell 9-4 to the Panthers.
Greenville scored seven runs in the first two innings. The Pioneers dominated innings three through nine by outscoring the Panthers 4-2.
This was Greenville’s second game outside and they are currently 1-1. The Pioneers will travel to Fayetteville, NC March 14-19 for their Spring Break games. The Pioneers play their first home game at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 1 against Loras.

Women’s Basketball
Senior Stacia Nemitz earned first team all-WIAC basketball honors while teammate Charity Stotmeister, senior, earned both honorable mention honors and an all-WIAC sportsmanship award.

Men’s Basketball
Senior Curt Hanson earned his third straight all-WIAC first team honor. Hanson is the first three-time honoree since Tyler Selk in 2003.
Senior Mike Shaw earned a spot on the honorable mention all-conference squad. Allan Ballweg earned a spot on the all-Sportsmanship Team.
