Column: Global Google domination imminent
By Johnathan Predaina • March 11, 2010 • Category: OpinionsWith an informal corporate motto of “Don’t Be Evil,” you would not expect a company to be taking over the world. Do not worry, Google’s takeover is a peaceful and covert one.
If you think the list on google.com/options is a long list, try the 21 printed pages from the “List of Google Products” Wikipedia article. If that does not scare you, go sign up for Google Health google.com/health. Using it, you can “organize health info in one place; gather medical records from doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies; share your information securely with family, doctors or caregivers.” Ask yourself now, ‘How much do I trust the Internet?’
Google Analytics tracks Web site visitors and then some. On March 3, a computer from Rossoshi, Russia (a town of 62,000) visited the campus radio station’s Web site. Google has a privacy policy and attests to never sell any of your information; but mistakes happen. When I heard that China tried (and somewhat succeeded) to hack Google, I laughed.
Is the world’s most populated and technologically advanced country going to stop me from using Google? Heck no. Google provides too many free services that are a part of our every day life. Google Calendar keeps life organized and it syncs with a cell phone calendar. I was paid for designing BoboFuerte.com and I used Google Sites to do it. The campus mail server is notorious for breaking, but I can send mail from Gmail using my @uwplatt.edu account. Anytime a song gets stuck in my head, I Google the lyrics and watch the video on YouTube. When I need to text someone I use Google Voice because it is free. Saving and making money using a free service — it does not take a broke college student to see what a great resource Google is.
Everything on Google is free because Google has taken over the online ad market by acquiring Double Click. Ninety seven percent of Google’s revenue comes from advertising. Google’s market share is now 69 percent, which is up from 34 percent before they acquired Double Click. What other business do you know that has a market share like that? None other than the evil Microsoft, which dominates the word processing and operating system market. Can you guess what Google is working on? If you guessed an operating system, then you guessed right.
I nearly forgot to mention I wrote this article in Google Docs, downloaded it, and e-mailed it via Gmail. I also shared the Google Doc and Google published it as a web page http://bit.ly/jp_google. I would suggest using the fastest web browser, Google Chrome, so you can blog about this on Blogger or Buzz even sooner.
The YouTube video “Google Threatens To Kill Users” said it best “… and if there is something hard to copy, like YouTube, we just buy it.” The most recent acquisition of Google is Picnik, an online scrap booking program. Pisca, Google’s desktop and online photo organizer, does not have a feature like Picnik but I would expect to see it in the near future. Previous big name Google acquisitions on the list of over 50 companies include AOL, YouTube and reCAPTCHA.
The Google Phone was not the iPhone killer people thought it would be, but Android programs (developed by Google) are becoming standard programs. Google is like a toxic poison seeping into the soil, affecting all of the water around it, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. On Feb. 19, Google was granted permission to buy and sell energy in bulk by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Domination in progress? I think so.
