James Nickasch has coached the majority of UW-Platteville’s track and field athletes since he started as head coach in 2001.

Nickasch worked as assistant coach from 1988-95. After taking a break from coaching from 1995-2000 Nickasch said he received a job offer in 1999 for a coaching-only position. However, he wanted to do more than just coach and teach students as well. Nickash took over in 2001 when the head coach left UW-P.

“I really enjoy working with the athletes,” Nickasch said. “They are just great people.”

“He has helped me have confidence in what I do as a vaulter, and in every day things,” said Amber Witthuhn, sophomore pole vaulter. “He encourages you in everything you do.”

Nickasch was born and raised in Appleton. He attended UW-La Crosse and majored in physical education and health. He teaches kinesiology and prep classes for elementary physical education majors.

In his free time Nickasch said he loves to play golf, run and hang out with his wife.

“Coach has taught me how to be a smarter runner both in races and in training. You can always tell when he expects you to get something done,” said Travis Hartman, sophomore sprint and relay runner. “I think these expectations have made me rethink what I want to accomplish each season and by the end of my career.”

Hartman also credits Nickasch’s coaching in helping him accomplish the goals he sets for himself through self-evaluation and expectation.

Nickasch has excelled in teaching techniques to better athletes’ performance and get results in competitions said Tom Drida, junior sprint and relay runner. Nickasch’s positive outlook and wisdom of the sport reflects through the attitudes of all the athletes competing.

“Coach Nickasch has taught me that, without a drive and focus to succeed, all training is for nothing,” Drida said. “Nickasch has also helped me grow as a person. He has helped me become a hard working individual who only wants to improve.”
