Freshman guard Claire Poad cited for underage, fake ID
By Jessica Vretenar • February 18, 2010 • Category: UncategorizedOn Jan. 30, women’s basketball player Claire Poad, freshman guard, was found in a bar and cited during a tavern check by Platteville police.
According to the UW-Platteville Athletic Code of Conduct that each athlete must sign and follow, alcohol is highly discouraged and “underage drinking is a violation of this Code of Conduct.”
According to the police report, Poad, 18, “presented officers with a false ID, and when confronted about her ID, she continued to lie to the officers.” Poad was given three citations: underage on licensed presence, ID card violations and resisting or obstructing an officer.
Poad was unable to be reached for comment at press time.
The policy states that “failure of the student athlete to comply and adhere to these standards of conduct, either on or off campus, could result in one or more of the following sanctions imposed by the head coach or athletic department in addition to any sanctions imposed by campus or legal authorities.”
The head coach, in cooperation with the athletic department is responsible for deciding upon the discipline for the student athlete. The sanction, as stated by the code of conduct, maps out possible sanctions as counseling, community service, suspension from contests, suspension from the intercollegiate team, dismissal from the intercollegiate team, other such action as is deemed appropriate by the head coach of the sport or by the athletic director in consultation with the head coach.
Mineral Point native Poad was Most Valuable Player of the Southwest Wisconsin conference and averaged 19.7 points per game during her senior year. Poad also received WBCA Honorable Mention All-State.
