James Markham, senior music business major and Alec Schielke, sophomore biology major performed in the PSC on Saturday afternoon as a part of UW-Platteville’s jazz festival.
The UW-P jazz ensembles Jazz I, Pioneer Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Consortium and Y-M combo performed in the Pioneer Haus in the Pioneer Student Center until late Saturday afternoon. A number of middle and high school student jazz ensembles from around the area, such as Beloit Memorial High School and Dubuque Senior High School also performed Saturday in the PSC. Students from these schools participated in competitive and non-competitive performances.
Workshops, jam sessions and even one-hour clinic sessions were also part of the festival. The UW-P jazz faculty assisted the middle and high school students during the clinic sessions.
“I played four songs, and we performed in the haus and it was packed,” Casey Seymour, electric bass player of the Jazz 1 ensemble and junior mechanical engineering major said. “The commons area was pretty full too. I had a lot of fun.”
“I wasn’t the biggest fan of jazz music but I really enjoyed going to the festival tonight. I’m pretty excited to go next year,” said Cody Warner, a junior psychology major.
