Sigma Alpha supports women in agriculture
By Kayla Smith • February 4, 2010 • Category: UncategorizedPromoting scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship are the four things the Sigma Alpha sorority focuses on.
The Sigma Alpha sorority is the only campus sorority that focuses primarily on women in agriculture.
The Sigma Alpha sorority is a relatively new sorority that has only been around since 1978. Rich Bockhop advises these young women. This year the sorority has 29 active members. Kitt Rhiner, a fifth year senior and a member of Sigma Alpha since the spring of 2008, enjoys being part of this sorority because, “It is a great group of girls all sharing the love of agriculture.”
“So far this year Sigma Alpha has participated in the Grant County Family Night and Agriculture in the Classroom,” Rhiner said. Agriculture in the Classroom is where all the members of the sorority will go to surrounding elementary schools and teach the students the importance of agriculture. Agriculture in the Classroom is a national service project. Rhiner loves being able to teach and spread her love of agriculture to children, as well as providing information on the diversity involved with agriculture.
Many of the members of Sigma Alpha love the opportunities the sorority offers that will help them in their careers in the Agriculture field. Kimberly Forrester, a member of the sorority for two and a half years, talked in depth about the vision of the Sigma Alpha sorority.
“Sigma Alpha strives to be the foremost organization fostering academic excellence and professional development while encouraging networking and lifelong bonds for women leading the agricultural industry,” Forrester said. “We strive to build diversity by marketing our organization on an international level.”
The Sigma Alpha sorority hopes to continue to grow in members as well as continuing to promote women excelling in agriculture.
