Instructor Profile: Day sings praises of alma mater
By Jamie Falkovitz • February 4, 2010 • Category: FeaturesAside from being the musical director for the musical theatre here at UW-Platteville, Susan Day enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and having a willingness to explore new things with an open mind.
Day, originally from Platteville, earned a bachelor’s in music from UW-P and understands the importance and quality of a good music program.
“As a teacher of voice, I feel very strongly that we must nurture the person as well as their instrument,” Day said. “Working with singers is a privilege. I will never grow tired watching them grow as singers and people.”
Before her arrival at UW-P, Day taught at Beloit College for four years. Day is now on her seventh year at UW-P and teaches applied voice, vocal pedagogy and bodywork for musicians.
Last semester Day got the opportunity to direct an opera workshop. It was a new experience for students to sing an opera scene. Day was proud of the effort the students put in toward this workshop and for never giving up no matter how challenging it became.
“I encourage my students to discover their musical self and be creative,” Day said. “Singing involves developing technique; gaining an understanding of how the singing instrument naturally functions. I focus on building a solid technique through a released body posture, achieving musicality within each phrase and exploring a wide range of musical styles and composers while having fun.”
On Jan. 31, ‘Kassia and Friends II’ was performed in the Center for the Arts. ‘Kassia’ consists of Day, along with Becky Demaree and Sharon Jenson. Day performs two recitals each year. She is looking forward to directing her next performance called ‘Cabaret,’ which will be held in the CFA April 7-11.
“I am privileged to work in this music department,” Day said. “I work alongside extremely talented musicians who are also supportive colleagues and friends.”
