Alliance offers support and friendship
By Jamie Falkovitz • January 28, 2010 • Category: UncategorizedThe Alliance looks to spread awareness and educate students about hate and discrimination that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students face.
“We offer support, friendship, leadership opportunities, a place to talk and a place to help plan and attend diversity activities,” senior Spanish and business administration major Emily Niebuhr said.
According to uwplatt.edu/org/alliance, “The Alliance provides both a forum for discussion of relevant political issues, social activities, support and education about gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and curious individuals and allies.”
By becoming a member of the Alliance, students can help others on campus and in the community understand and acknowledge GLBT issues.
“I feel that people should join the Alliance because as an organization, we need to help spread awareness to the campus and the public on GLBT issues,” junior, communication technologies major Brandon Rounds said.
The Alliance, consisting of 25 active members, participates every year in the Day of Silence, Rainbow Rave, National Coming Out Day, Ally Week, World AIDS Day and Walk-a-Mile.
“The Alliance continues to work on making UW-P more GLBT friendly and spread more awareness throughout the campus and community,” Rounds said.
The Alliance is advised by communciation technologies associate professor Mary Rose Williams.
To learn more about the UW-P Alliance, attend a meeting at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in 126 Warner Hall or visit uwplatt.edu/org/alliance.
