By Jamie Falkovitz • December 10, 2009 • Category: UncategorizedThe 2009 Christmas Telethon, in support of Wisconsin Badger Camp, was held in the Studio of the Pioneer Tower from noon to 10 p.m. on Dec. 5.
The money raised at the Telethon helps provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to attend Wisconsin Badger Camp.
According to badgercamp.org, the Christmas Telethon is currently seen in over 30 communities in southwestern Wisconsin and northeastern Iowa, and worldwide via the Web.
Wisconsin Badger Camp, a private, non-profit organization, allows individuals with developmental disabilities to have the opportunity to camp, fish, swim and hike.
This year, the 2009 Christmas Telethon featured numerous live interviews with people such as UW-P Interim Provost Duane Ford, Executive Director of Badger Camp Brent Bowers and a few campers themselves. Local talent acts were performed by members of the Platteville School of Dance, Betty Hayes Dancers and members of the UW-P hip hop group, Fusion. A live call-in auction area consisted of many different items including an autographed football, holiday decorations, sweatshirts and Badger hockey tickets.
“The best part was that the university can help with such a noble cause, and that the project provides the students with real, hands on experience in a live television event,” Supervising Producer, Russell Will said. “The students are able to get real world experience on a live television event working with television professionals, all in the name of helping people in our very own community and from around the state.”
Donations raised at the 2009 Christmas Telethon totaled $64,153. The funds raised allow the Wisconsin Badger Camp to help out individuals who cannot afford it. More than 200 people participated in the production of the Christmas Telethon.
“We have never turned down an individual because of their disabilities or financial difficulties,” said Betsy Ralph, Development and Communications Director for Wisconsin Badger Camp.
According to badgercamp.org, Wisconsin Badger Camp has provided camp experiences to over 21,000 individuals with developmental disabilities.
