Column: Seniors’ efforts outweigh results on the football field

The 2009 Pioneer football season came to a close on Nov. 14 with a 41-27 loss to UW-Stevens Point, bringing their season record to a disappointing 3-7.  For the seniors on this season’s team, their careers are over.

The team did not always get the results they wanted, but that does not discount the effort and passion that was shown.

The Pioneers struggled through an injury riddled season in 2009, and were never able to get their offense to perform the way they wanted it to.  At times this season, the offense showed signs of improvement, but ultimately, inconsistency was a big problem.

The one thing that was consistent for UW-Platteville throughout the season was their effort.  I had the opportunity this season to broadcast a number of the Pioneers’ games for WSUP, and I never once saw a lack of effort on either side of the ball.

This is truly a testament to the seniors on this team who, throughout a frustrating season, were able to keep their teammates’ passionate about playing football.  This is a tough thing to do during a season in which injuries, as well as blown leads were so prevalent.

There were highlights this season that included Tony Smidl becoming the best statistical kicker in Pioneer history, and most recently Quincy Hudson, Tom Bruins and Tim Stephenson all being named to the First-Team All-WIAC defense.

While the season was not as successful as fans, players and coaches hoped it would be, it was not all bad.  Who can forget the game sealing interception from Hudson in the Battle for the Bridge against the University of Dubuque, or the back to back interceptions Brian Snyder had against UW-SP in the last game of the season?

These were plays that truly showed the commitment that these young men made to the team and UW-P.

I would personally like to thank each and every senior from this season’s team for continuing to fight and play with a passion that is unmatched, and also wish them luck with whatever they do in the future.
