SUFAC finishes overdue 2010 budget

The Segregated University Fee Allocation Commission only has to review reconsiderations until they have finished work on next year’s budget.

Budget reconsiderations will be due at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 24. To request a budget reconsideration, groups need to email sufac@uwplatt.edu explaining how their budget was misinterpreted. Forms and instructions are available on UWPLink under SUFAC’s Finance tab. Reconsideration hearings will start Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m.

This year’s budget was finished about one week later than in previous years. SUFAC President Jared Keehn said it was because of conflicting views of commissioners.

Last year, 103 groups requested funds totaling over $1.4 million. SUFAC had a target number of $630,000 and allocated $625,413.
This year, 95 groups requested funds totaling over $1.2 million. SUFAC had a target number of $640,000 and allocated $638,283.
Once the budget is done, SUFAC will move on to other projects.

“We are actively pursuing funding sheet music for the music department through textbook rental funds,” Keehn said. No sheet music funding was given for any groups for this reason.

Keehn also said SUFAC is looking to use a portion of student fees for ‘green’ needs of the entire campus. SUFAC is discussing starting a Pioneer Sustainablity Fund, with money coming from student segregated fees.

“Examples of this fund’s uses could include a large scale wind farm at the Pioneer Farm, or putting solar panels on the roofs of current or new buildings,” Keehn said. Money for the fund could come from segregated fees currently paying off a bond for the 1980 renovation of the Williams Fieldhouse. This bond is costing each student $18 per year.

“Once the bond is up, we could keep segregated fees at the same level instead of dropping them and use the money for the new sustainability fund,” Keehn said. The sustainability fund has not been decided on yet, and is still in discussion.
