Letter to the editor: Leave athletes’ incidents in the police reports

By Letter To The Editor • November 19, 2009 • Category: Letters to the Editor

As a weekly reader of the Exponent, I enjoy catching up on the various news stories around campus. However, in recent weeks there have been a few stories that have unfairly singled out members of this community.

On a campus that strives for equality in all areas, student-athletes seem to continue to be singled out. Not for their athletic achievements or to praise the character of these young people, but to publicly defame them in a manner that is not subjected to all other students. I question what the recent articles written about UW-Platteville athletes were intended to display? Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t the paper post all legal incidents in the police reports each week? The student athletes on this campus are not on scholarship, they are not being paid to play here. The only double standard that is related to the student athletes on this campus is the one that is being displayed in this publication. I cannot recall of any other clubs or organizations whose members have been singled out and put on display under similar circumstances. While I am not condoning the actions of these students, I would simply ask that all members of this campus community be treated and represented fairly. If separate articles are going to be written about the mistakes made by student athletes, then all members of this campus should be subjected to the same standards and be at risk to have their picture displayed for all to see. Of course, there is a simple solution to this problem. Leave details on legal incidents regarding members of the community where they belong: In the police reports.
