Of the 54 hopefuls fighting for roster spots at the Wrestleoffs on Nov. 7, only 30 wrestlers made the team.
Head coach Chris Walter had the tough decision of cutting the 2009-2010 wrestling team to 30 members from the 54 athletes. The Wrestleoffs, which took place Nov. 7, allowed hopefuls to duel for limited roster spots.
Walter’s squad came off a disappointing conference finish last season.
“Last year we finished in top ten in a 32-team tournament and ended up losing a dual to a team we should have beat,” Walter said.
Bringing in a fresh team, Walter will focus on foot work and basic skills to help bring the team together and become a more well-rounded team.
Jesse Milks, senior captain, received All-American honors during the 2008-2009 season.
Milks said bringing in the new bodies will help returning players step up to their positions, as well as encourage the new players to improve and compete at the college level.
Walter hopes to see Milks back at nationals this season. He also hopes to see higher numbers alongside Milks, making a national appearance.
“We were a great tournament team, but not so great as a dualing team,” Walter said. “This year we’ll be more well-rounded.”
The Wrestleoffs allowed returning players to hit the mats and compete for starting spots against one another.
The season opener will see UW-Platteville travelling to Galesburg, Ill. for the Knox Invite on Saturday, Nov. 14.
