UW-Platteville Career Center hosts event to teach dinner etiquette
By Kelsey Pliner • November 5, 2009 • Category: NewsDinner with Ms. Manners was hosted Oct. 28 by the Career Center at the Nohr Art Gallery in Ullsvik Hall. The professional etiquette event was held for UW-Platteville students interested in learning the proper etiquette for mealtime interviews and professional business events. Thirty students attended the event, along with local business representatives and UW-P alumni.
“We invite local business representatives to the event in order for the students to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with them during the meal,” said Diana Trendt, Career Center interim director. “It’s a great opportunity for the professionals to share tips and information about the competitive job market today.”
This year, Ben Graham, of Graham Style Store for Men and Women in Dubuque, kicked off the night as the guest speaker. Graham shared advice with students about professional dress wear. He informed students how to plan their attire for an interview and the differences between professional attire and business casual.
“One of the most important things I learned from attending the event was how to dress for an interview,” said Adam Colbrese, a senior occupational safety management major. “Ben Graham made good points about dressing for an interview and job opportunity.”
The students were provided with a meal following the opening presentation. Deb Putnam, assistant director of Dining Services, instructed the students on how to prepare for mealtime interviews.
“I learned a lot about table etiquette,” said Colbrese. “I think it’s important for students to know the proper meal time etiquette so they will be able to impress future employers.”
The etiquette event is held every semester.
