UW-Platteville’s Hall of Fame Class of 2009 exclusively Pioneers

Five 2009 Hall of Fame Inductees, shown here with Interim Chancellor Carol Sue Butts on the right, were honored at the induction ceremony on Oct. 24. Every year, UW-Platteville inducts members who have made significant contributions to athletics either during their time in service at UW-P or after graduation. This year’s inductees are all alumni of UW-P. The inductees were also honored during halftime of the UW-P vs. UW-Oshkosh home game on Oct. 24 during the Family Weekend festivities.

Richard Malson: Class of 1961

Richard Malson graduated from UW-P as a three-sport letterman with honors in baseball, basketball and football. Malson was the record-setting running back for the Pioneers. Malson was chosen to play on the 1957 WSUC championship squad for football and capped his senior year as captain for the Pioneers. Malson signed a professional baseball contract based on his performance as a Pioneer. Malson coached and taught for 30 years in Milledgeville, Ill. until his retirement.

Douglas McArthur: Class of 1982

Douglas McArthur led Darlington High School to state domination in football by winning WIAA championships in 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1995. McArthur led the team to three second-place finishes in 1993, 1994 and 1996. McArthur was selected as a Shrine Bowl assistant coach in 1988 and won the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in 1995. McArthur has been inducted into the WFCA Hall of Fame. He coached 10 state track and field medalists and 12 wrestling medalists as assistant coach.

Bob Haffele: Class of 1984

Bob Haffele has coached the Randolf High School boys’ basketball team to great success in the WIAA D4 competition. The Rockets have appeared in 11 WIAA state tournaments, played eight state championship games and won seven championships. Randolf took Division 4 championships in 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007. Haffele holds the state record for a number of state titles. Haffele also earned the Associated Press State Coach of the Year in 2005. He was head coach in the 2005 state all-star game.

Jeff Pustina: Class of 1986

Jeff Pustina has led the Cuba City girls’ basketball team to six championships. The Cubans have won 400 games during Pustina’s 23 years as head coach.  Under his reign, they have only suffered 97 losses, claimed 13 conference, 15 regional, seven sectional as well as the six state championships. Pustina was also awarded the AP Coach of the Year in 1993 and 2005, as well as the WBCA Coach of the Year honors in 1991 and 2006. Pustina was also selected to coach the 2003 all-star game.

David Kamps: Class of 1988

David Kamps graduated from UW-P as the most accomplished discus thrower in the university’s history. Kamps was a four-time All-American for the event during his time as a Pioneer. He placed fourth in the NCAA Division III national championships in 1985, third in 1986 and 1987 and fourth in 1988. Kamps also broke the school record in the hammer throw and placed 13 times in the WSUC. He placed all four years in the indoor and outdoor shot put and outdoor discus. Kamps was national champion in shot put eight times and three times in discus.
