UW-P aims to give parents a break, make a little cash with kids’ nights
By Exponent Brief • October 29, 2009 • Category: SportsThe Pioneer Activity Center came alive Oct. 23 with the screams and shouts of children from the community for Kids Night Out.
Kids Night Out is a fundraising event for women’s sports teams at UW-Platteville. This event, which is hosted in rotations by all of the women’s sports teams, was hosted Friday night by the women’s softball and golf teams.
“Kids Night Out is a concept that I brought back with me from the University of Massachusetts Lowell,” Mark Molesworth, UW-P athletic director, said. “We did it there and we did it successfully, so I brought it here.”
“The idea is kids’ night out, but in reality it’s really parents’ night out,” Molesworth said.
Molesworth said the idea is that parents drop their children off at the PAC at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy a few hours free of their children to do what they want.
While the kids are on campus, they enjoy swimming, movies, games in the gym, face painting and snacks.
Athletics generally make $1,200 to $2,000 per night when hosting Kids Night Out.
“It went well, but we didn’t have as many kids there this time as last time,” Samantha Niemann, junior softball player, said.
The next Kids Night Out will take place on Friday, Nov. 13 and will be hosted by the track and field team. If there are any questions regarding this activity, contact Paul Erickson, coordinator for Kids Night Out, at ericksop@uwplatt.edu.
