Freshman Richie Knepfor scored his first hat trick with the Pioneers in their defeat over UW-Madison. The Pioneers ended their Fall Ball season 2-5.
The Badgers jumped off to a quick lead with three goals only minutes after the first face-off of the game. The Pioneers continued to struggle during the first half, lagging behind the Badgers who couldn’t capitalize any more than their initial goals.
For the next three quarters the Pioneers managed to push back against the Badgers and turn around the game.
Freshman Richie Knepfor pulled off a hat trick to help secure the victory for UW-P. Freshman goalie Tim Luebke stopped a couple decisive goals that helped keep confidence and adrenaline pumping for the team, Brent Beveroth, senior, said.
“We fell to the same team in our first game of the season, so to beat them to wrap up Fall Ball helped us because it showed us how much we’ve improved as a team, and it gives us a lot of motivation and confidence going into winter practices,” Beveroth said.
The rookies progressed during the season after being granted a lot of playing time to get to know the game and how to read one another on the field.
The defense put a stop to the Badgers quickly after their initial breakdown during the opening of the match. The attacks ran the offense and continued to put shots consistently on goal throughout the game. Passing was more consistent during the game, and ground balls were not given up as easily as they had been during previous games.
The team will take a break before hitting the gym during winter practices. Cardio and weight training will be key in keeping the team fit and mentally focused on the spring season, Beveroth said.
Overall the Pioneers finished with a 2-5 record during Fall Ball.
