Pioneer football lets lead slip away for second week

UW-Oshkosh scored a touchdown in the final minute against the UW-Platteville football team on Oct. 24 to beat the Pioneers 23-20 at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer stadium.

Sophomore wide receiver Darin Blaser missed a catch during the last few minutes of the game.

The Pioneers were unable to stop their opponent’s comeback in the fourth quarter for the second week in a row.

UW-P grabbed the early lead when senior quarterback Mitch Shadley threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to senior Jimmy Spehn. An extra point by senior kicker Tony Smidl gave the Pioneers a 7-0 lead with 1:42 left in the quarter.

The Titans intercepted a Shadley pass on the Pioneers’ next offensive drive. UW-O returned the pass for 25 yards to the end zone and added an extra point to tie up the game.

UW-O fumbled the ball on a punt return; UW-P sophomore line backer Jesse Lindemulder recovered the fumble with 11:03 left in the half.

Smidl kicked a 36-yard field goal with 8:13 on the clock to give the Pioneers a 10-7 lead over the Titans.

UW-P senior Tom Bruins intercepted a Titans’ pass to put the ball back in the Pioneers’ hands. UW-P settled for another field goal attempt, but Smidl missed the 30-yard field goal.

The Titans fumbled the ball on their own 20-yard line. Lindemulder was there to pick it up for his second fumble recovery of the game.

UW-O attacked the Pioneers’ running game and forced a fumble to turn over possession. Less than three minutes later Bruins forced a fumble on the Titans and senior Eric Jensen recovered the ball with 2:49 left in the half.

The Pioneers’ scored in the last minute of the half with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Shadley to sophomore Travis Nelson. Smidl added the extra point to expand UW-P’s lead 17-7.

The Titans scored first in the third quarter with a 27-yard field goal at 7:12 in the quarter to cut the lead down, 17-10.

UW-P scored a 32-yard field goal from Smidl with little over a minute left in the quarter to make it 20-10 game.

The Titans fought back with a 1-yard touchdown run. UW-P senior defensive back Quincy Hudson blocked the extra point to keep the Pioneer’s lead 20-16.
The Pioneers’ offense got the ball down to UW-O’s 22-yard line, but penalties forced them to settle for a 38-yard field goal attempt. The kick was no good, stirring up momentum in the Titans.

UW-O had a little over four minutes left in the game to attempt a touchdown; that was all the time the Titans needed to take the victory away from the home team.

The Titans ran the ball in for a four yard touchdown with 35 seconds left on the clock. The Pioneers offense was unable to get into field goal range to tie the game.

UW-P watched another victory slip between their fingers with UW-O winning 23-20.

Shadley completed 16 of 32 passes for 146 yards. Spehn led in receiving with 4 catches for 49 yards. Roscoe carried the ball 19 times for 64 yards.
The Pioneers had 9 penalties for 109 yards.

Sophomore Ross Mueller and junior Randy Langer each made 7 tackles.

The Titans improved to 4-3 and 2-2 in the WIAC.

The Pioneers fell to 3-4 and 1-3 in the WIAC.
