Homecoming came to a close with the annual “M” Lighting and a fireworks show.
As the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Alumni Chapter President, I would like to extend my thanks to the Alchemists and the UW-Platteville chemistry Department for taking part in a long-standing tradition, the lighting of the “M.” This Homecoming, the chemistry Department celebrated the 65th year of offering chemistry degrees. This is a great milestone and to celebrate, the chemistry department hosted a special reunion honoring retired faculty and staff, heard some great speakers, including the American chemical Society’s President and secured a donation of fireworks, which were set off the top of the “M” after it was lit! This was the first time that a non-engineering group participated in this tradition. Our chapter represents engineers, chemists, mathematicians and computer scientists and the EMS Alumni Chapter is pleased that all members of the college feel that the “M” lighting is their tradition. There is a significant amount of work that goes into the lighting of the “M,” from the setup, the lighting and the take down. Those who have participated in this tradition know it is a lot harder than it looks, but that it is great to be a part of the tradition! If you have an interest in assisting with the next lighting or the whitewashing, please contact Jim Almquist at almquisj@uwplatt.edu. Jim coordinates these events.
