UW-Platteville women’s soccer smashes the Flying Dutch

UW-Platteville women’s soccer cruised into Michigan in search of a much-needed victory against Finlandia. The Pioneers crushed the Flying Dutch 8-0 on Oct. 4.

UW-P flew off to an early lead just two minutes after the first whistle. Freshman defender Alysa Strasser scored the Pioneers’ first goal, assisted by freshman defender Anna Strasser.

Five minutes later Anna Strasser fired a shot past the Finlandia keeper to extend the Pioneers’ lead.

At halftime, the Pioneers had a 6-0 lead, with 17 shots on goal.

Junior Sarah Miller came close to pulling off a hat trick, with her first goal assisted by senior defender Kim Schneckloth in the 61st minute. Miller found the back of the net again in the 70th minute.

The Pioneers maintained possession during the match, while keeping the Flying Dutch offense at bay. UW-P had another 11 shots on goal during the second half, while Finlandia only had 2 for the entire game.

Freshman defender Bethany Weber sealed the victory for the Pioneers with the final goal of the match coming in the 75th minute off an assist from junior forward Allie Metcalfe.

According to the Sports Information Web site, the Pioneers finished with their third highest-scoring game in the history of soccer at UW-P.
The vicotry over Finlandia improved the Pioneers’ record 6-6-2 overall.

The Pioneers will take on UW-Stevens Point in the Homecoming match at Pioneer Stadium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8.
