Pioneer volleyball could lose starter to underage citation
By Jessica Vretenar • September 30, 2009 • Category: UncategorizedBriana Kaiser, starter and middle hitter for the UW-Platteville volleyball team, was cited by Campus Police for underage drinking at 1:14 a.m. Sept. 27. She has been suspended for one game, but depending on the the coach’s decision, these charges could get Kaiser kicked off the team.
Police found Kaiser, a sophomore, hiding north of the loading docks at the Pioneer Student Center, according to the report from Platteville police. Police say Kaiser admitted to drinking and was cited for an underage drinking offense.
According to the police report, this was Kaiser’s second offense for underage drinking.
“I screwed up and I’m taking full responsibility for my actions,” Kaiser said.
Kaiser had no further comment regarding the charges.
The UW-P Student Athlete Code of Conduct states, “alcohol consumption is highly discouraged,” and “underage drinking is a violation of this Code of Conduct.” Athletes are not required to sign any waivers against alcohol consumption during the season.
Head Coach Deb Schulman said she will decide on Kaiser’s punishment. Each situation is looked at separately, Schulman said.
“I don’t know for sure what it will be, but she will not be playing in [Tuesday's] game,” Schulman said.
The Pioneers won their Sept. 29 game against Beloit College.
The potential sanctions listed in the code of conduct include counseling, community service, suspension from contests, suspension from the team, dismissal or other action determined by the head coach.
Kaiser will continue to practice with the team and will return to play this season, Schulman said.
Kaiser earned one of six all-tournament honors during the UW-P Invite Sept. 25-26. She led the Pioneers with 45 kills during the weekend tournament. Kaiser earned WIAA Division 3 all-state honors during high school at Cuba City, and was named to the all-tournament third team. Kaiser also broke the Wisconsin record for kills percentage with .478 while at Cuba City.
Bench players will replace Kaiser’s starting position during her undetermined absence, Schulman said.
