Rich Egley, dean of students at UW-Platteville, will undergo surgery Tuesday, Sept. 22 to remove blockage to his right carotid artery. If the surgery is successful, he will likely return to campus within a week.

Egley said the surgery will be conducted at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison and should take two to three hours. If successful, he should be released from the hospital the next day.

The surgical procedure is called a carotid endarterectomy. According to WebMD, a small incision is made in the neck, the artery is exposed, blood flow is rerouted, the artery is opened, the blockage is removed and the artery and skin incisions are closed.
