UW-Platteville chancellor-search meetings start next week
By Stephanie Coren • September 17, 2009 • Category: NewsThe Chancellor Search and Screen Committee has set up forums to take place starting 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21 in the Platteville West room of the Pioneer Student Center. The forums are open to the public to voice their questions or concerns. This committee consists of 10 faculty members, including the committee chair Joanne Wilson, professor of General Engineering; two academic staff members; one classified staff member; two students; two community members and two administrators, creating a 19-member committee.
Dawn Drake, member of the Chancellor Search and Screen Committee, has some specific ideas about what qualities she would like to see in the next chancellor.
“To be a successful chancellor, you need to want to be a chancellor at this specific institution, not just applying for a job. [The position] needs to be less like a job and more of a passion for the institution” Drake said.
The committee’s first meeting was Wednesday, Sept 16. This meeting will initiate discussions about the desired qualifications of the incoming chancellor. The forums are the committee’s next step in establishing the qualifications of the chancellor. The forums are a way for the community, both on campus and off, to get involved in the selection process by voicing their opinions. The comittee strongly encourages everyone to come to the forums and ask questions about the selection process for the new chancellor. The forums are designed to inform the community of what is going on. The committee wants to encourage people to get involved with these meetings, because their input is just as important as that of the committee.
The committee is looking for input from members of the UW-P community to complement the expectations they already have for candidates vying for the position. Quincy Bufkin, senior theater major and committee member said, “We as a committee are going to set the standards high for the new chancellor, because Chancellor Markee set the standards high.”
