UW-Platteville’s head soccer coach has returned home from the hospital after an August heart attack.

Coach Enzo Fuschino was hospitalized following a heart attack after playing in a game during a soccer tournament on Aug. 1. Fuschino was rushed to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, and was not released until Sept. 5.

Those concerned were able to be kept up to date during Fuschino’s stay at Mercy through his CarePages Web site.

Fuschino was sedated and unresponsive for several days during initial recovery. The recovery process was slow, but with patience Fuschino began to respond to those around him.

The community rallied around the Fuschino family to show their support, Mark Molesworth, athletic director said. Collections were held throughout the summer to help the family with hospital, food and travel expenses.

“The football team went over to help out, doing things like cutting the grass and work around the house,” Molesworth said.

Coach Fuschino has been with UW-Platteville for two seasons, and led the women’s soccer team to a six-win improvement in his first season. He also led the men’s soccer team to their first ever NCAA Playoffs appearance according to his coaching stats.

In Fuschino’s absence, assistant coach Allison Sanyi will act as interim head coach until Fuschino is fully recovered and able to return.

Fuschino’s family was unavailable for comment but do welcome any visitors since the coach’s return home.

“It was devastating news, for a staff member to have that issue. Our thoughts have been with him and his family,” Molesworth said.
