Swine-flu symptoms confirmed in two UW-Platteville students
By Kyle Scherwinski • September 10, 2009 • Category: News, Top StoryCampus officials have confirmed that several UW-Platteville students are exhibiting symptoms of the H1N1 virus, but they stopped short of saying swine flu is here.
“I would hesitate to say they are confirmed cases [of swine flu],” said Special Assistant to the Chancellor Barb Daus. Though no blood work has been done to confirm the presence of swine flu in the students, UW-P is still treating them as though they have it.
At a Faculty Senate meeting on Sept. 8, Interim Provost Duane Ford said two students had swine-flu symptoms on campus, but that the students were isolating themselves. People with swine flu should stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever has disappeared, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
UW-P is monitoring the situation closely, Daus said.
“We are keeping a watch on it to see if high numbers of people are not in class or RAs are reporting large numbers of sick residents,” Daus said.
A $12 seasonal-flu vaccine should be available through Student Health Services as early as the end of next week, though it does not protect against swine flu. But an H1N1 vaccine is undergoing tests and is scheduled for release this fall, according to the CDC.
