Letter to the Editor: Parking lot not a street
By Guest Column • April 30, 2009 • Category: UncategorizedNo one enjoys having their routine disrupted by the road construction on Hickory Street. However, if you must cut through Parking Lot 6 as a detour, please slow down.
Lot 6 is not a street; it is a parking lot. The speed limit is not 25 mph. At most, it is 10 mph.
In the past couple weeks I have been nearly hit four times by a vehicle speeding through the lot. Once, as a pedestrian, I was exiting my car and stepped from behind the mini-van parked next to me and was nearly struck by a car cutting through the lot. The other three near misses were while I was attempting to back out of my parking space.
There are many large vehicles in Lot 6. Visibility is very poor when you’re parked next to a large truck or van, so I always use caution when backing out – especially now with people cutting through the lot.
Please don’t make the campus police feel the need to guard the entrances or install temporary speed bumps. Everyone needs to just use some common sense and respect. Please slow down while driving through Lot 6.
