Letter to the Editor: Antagonist

I completely understand the concept of the “Antagonist.” Having read the “Antagonist” for 13 years and having been a target on numerous occasions, the stories have always been exaggerations and poked fun at various people. But your “shot” at the men’s basketball team was inappropriate. The pain you caused has impacted the students, coaches, staff and parents of these students.

You used a picture of Charlie Lohoff, a senior captain on the team. This young man cramped up so badly after the semi-final WIAC playoff game he had to be transported to the hospital via ambulance. Less than 48 hours later, he was back on the court in the championship game at UW-Stevens Point. I have the utmost respect for Charlie, as do his teammates, coaches and fellow UW-P students, not only for this type of effort but what he represents both on and off the court.
You disrespected a group who worked very hard on the court and represented the university in a very positive way, both in athletics and in the community. The terms you used, “Epic Fail” and “Suck Bags,” are disgusting, callous and malicious.

I was in that locker room after the Wheaton game. I witnessed tears, pain and hurt in these young men, who put time, effort and caring into representing this university. Using someone’s pain for a laugh was in very poor taste. You are rubbing salt in an open wound. You showed a complete lack of respect for your fellow students. It was the ultimate cheap shot, hitting below the belt.

Pioneer student athletes are your fellow students. One of our core values is to treat people with respect at all times. I’d like to see their fellow students show the same respect.
