Self-awareness key to success

As college students and future employees, many of you are potentially entering a fast- paced world where one quality can make all the difference regardless of the career path chosen. That quality is leadership. On Feb. 26, Nicole Jellison presented the first session of the Pioneer Student Center Leadership Certificate Program.

The program anticipates that the students who complete the program earn a certificate at the end of the semester. When asked why leadership was chosen as a program to guide, Jellison said that her intentions are helping students seek out their actions, and show how their actions affect others around them.

James Shannon, a general engineering major and Stephanie Koch, a communication technologies major, attended the first program of the series and had similar outlooks on UW-Platteville’s leadership program.

“Leadership is a great quality,” Koch said. “I consider myself a leader, and leaders are always looking to better themselves in training; this is an excellent eye opener.”

Shannon attended the event to develop his leadership skills and earn his certificate. He also wanted to boost up his résumé.

Jellison was thrilled with the outcome of students that attended this program. Jellison said that students can relate what they have learned in this leadership program to many circumstances.

“Knowing yourself will help assist appropriate actions and interactions [related to life situations] that students are put into,” Jellison said. “It is always important to build leadership skills.”

Jellison wants students to be aware that flyers with session information are hanging up around the PSC. The leadership program is for any student, but to obtain a leadership program certification, a completion of five sessions and a written reflection paper are required.

The next session will be at noon Thursday, March 12 in the Computer Conference Room located in the PSC.
