BarlowGirl sings music with a message

BarlowGirl, a pop/rock Christian band, performed March 1 at the Center for the Arts. Sponsored by the Lutheran Church of Peace and UW-Platteville’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the three sister band performed original hits from previous albums and a song from their upcoming album in an acoustic setting.

Wisconsin native Danen Kane opened for BarlowGirl. He performed a four-song set, with three original songs entitled “Alive,” “Inheritance” and “I Want You to Believe.”

Rebecca Barlow performed as part of Pop/Rock Christian band BarlowGirl March 1. BarlowGirl returned to the studios to finish their fifth album.

Kane wrote the song “I Want You to Believe” for a friend in college, who struggled with image problems and depression.

After Kane’s four song set, BarlowGirl took the stage and performed some of their original songs like “Never Alone,” “Let Go,” “Mirror” and “I Believe in Love” on a guitar, piano and a bongo. The songs were written by BarlowGirl members: Rebecca, Alyssa and Lauren, based on personal experiences or articles that they have read.

“Mirror” was about Rebecca’s struggle with eating disorders and comparing herself to super models in middle school. She describes the song as her testimony and how she gave herself over to God after accepting that she wasn’t perfect.

The three sisters joked with the crowd about how they started the band.

“How we met is a popular question,” Lauren said.

“Our parents introduced us,” Alyssa said.

The last name of the women is Barlow and they added “girl” to the end for obvious reason—they’re all women.

After the concert, the band opened up a question and answer session for audience members.

“I loved the raw honesty and that it was so much more than just a few songs that they sang,” Alisha Slowey, a UW-P alumna and resident director for Brockert Hall, said.

The women, ranging from 23 to 29 years in age, started touring five years ago after signing with their record label. The Barlow parents are the sisters’ managers, making the band a family event.

BarlowGirl enjoys being together as a group and touring to new places. They believe that experiencing the tour together brings them closer.

“Experiencing it together—we are making really great memories,” Rebecca said.

On March 2, the Barlow sisters will be returning to Nashville to finish recording their fifth album. To find more information on BarlowGirl, visit their Web site at barlowgirl.com.
