Senate streaming meetings online

Student Senate has made their meeting videos available online. Making it to a senate meeting or watching it on Channel 5 can be difficult to fit into a student’s schedule. Senate hopes that by making it easier for students to watch their meetings, student invlolvement will increase.

Over winter break, members of the senate contacted Colleen Garrity, Media Technology Services director, about the possibility of creating an easier way for our senators to keep a record of their meetings. Previously, Senate had used space from UW-Madison to record their elections.

“We also streamed the telethon and had over 500 viewers,” Garrity said.
Senators feel streaming the senate meetings would have several benefits. Students will be able to access senate meetings more easily, alumni will be able to keep track of campus issues and senate will have a better record of their meetings.
Andrew Lewis, parliamentarian and liberal arts education senator, was one of the proponents of the online senate meetings.

“We were looking for a better record of ourselves,” Lewis said. “I think it will be a good resource for students.”

Lewis said he was hopeful that the videos would encourage more involvement and awareness on campus.

Students won’t have to worry about a tuition hike to pay for this program. Garrity said the program is inexpensive. There are other uses for the streaming video aside from senate meetings. Garrity said, streaming video has great possibilities for widening the distance learning program at UW-Platteville. Professors would be able to upload their lectures for distance learning students.
