After an extensive remodeling, the grand opening of the Greenwood Avenue Market will be underway Nov. 3-7. Prizes and samples will be handed out throughout the week.

“We wanted to have a place for the students to be able to socialize closer to the residence halls,” Karen Bast, Dining Services Administrator for Glenview Commons, said.

Prizes include gift cards, a cooler and canopy, a portable DVD player, and an HDTV DVD recorder. WSUP will also be broadcasting out of Greenwood Avenue Market Nov. 5 and 6.

Tastings throughout the week will include samples of various drinks and juices; grill items such as pizza, panini, tri-tators, onion rings, and cheese curds; and ice cream cones.

“In the small C-Store there was no room, we needed the upgrade,” Nora Bonin, food production manager, said.

“The market is stocked with local products from vendors like Cedar Crest and Shullsburg Cheese,” Bast said. With the renovations, as well as the food and distribution products, the Market’s staff are focused on reducing their carbon footprint by focusing locally.

“Grab and go items are being discussed; we want containers that are biodegradable yet cost effective,” Bonin said.

“The food choices at the market are designed to be foods that students have grown up with and enjoy,” Bast said. Surveys will also be conducted to further design the menu to students’ preferences.

Wii stations and pool tables are already set up for students to enjoy, free of cost.

“They can check out their entertainment for an hour at a time, and continually check it out as long as there is no one waiting for the system or table,” Bast said.

“We are hoping to add more games. We’re anticipating dart boards and foosball tables, as well as large screen TVs that flank both ends in the lounge areas,” Bast said.

Designed to be a social haven for students on the residence hall side of campus, Bast hopes to see events held at The Greenwood Avenue Market. A card

tournament is one possibility for students, as well as concerts and programs.

“It’s better than I thought after only seeing the top of Glenview for a while. I didn’t realize all this was coming,” Bryan Guenther, freshman agribusiness major, said.
