The UW-Platteville volleyball team is set to promote and fundraise breast cancer awareness. The Pioneers, along with the rest of the WIAC volleyball teams, will host one home game called Dig for the Cure to fundraise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The athletes will gather pledges or flat donations for the amount of digs that they make during their match against the UW-Whitewater Warhawks at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7. All of the donations will go to the Komen foundation out of Madison.

“I’m excited to be able to play volleyball for a good cause,” junior outside hitter Stephanie Tronnes said. “We are raising money for those in need.”

The Pioneers average 14 digs per set and if a pledge or donation is made, free admission will be received head volleyball coach Deb Schulman said.

The women will wear pink warm up shirts with the “Dig for the Cure” logo on them, pink shoe laces and pink hair ribbons. “Dig for the Cure” T-shirts will be given away at the game as well as breast cancer educational information.

Coach Schulman is part of the Division three head coach committee and brought up the idea to bring the “Dig for the Cure” match to the WIAC after hearing about it at a convention.

“All of the proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation on behalf of the conference after all of the WIAC teams host their own Dig for the Cure match,” coach Schulman said.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Web site, they are the world’s largest and most progressive network of breast cancer survivors and activists with their work being dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage. They have supported every advance in breast cancer research in the past 25 years. More information concerning the foundation can be found on their Web site at komen.org.

“This is a wonderful way to support the cause,” Schulman said. “This will definitely boost the playing confidence for the girls.”
