Higgins’ OWI charge dropped
By Heather Schaufenbil • September 17, 2008 • Category: UncategorizedOWI charges against a UW-Platteville All-American wrestler have been dismissed.
According to the Platteville Police press release, in the early morning hours of April 8 three-time national qualifier Ryan P. Higgins was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated.
There was not enough evidence to carry out the charges so the case was resolved on other charges.
“He pled to reckless driving on a moped,” Jeff Scott, Higgins’ lawyer, said. “He didn’t want to have to go to trial.”
According to the UW-P student athlete code of conduct, Higgins could still be suspended or released from the team. But no decision regarding his status has yet been made.
“[Head wrestling coach Chris Walter] and I have been talking about the situation, but we have not come to a final decision,” Mark Molesworth, UW-P athletic director, said.
Higgins is prepared to go along with their decision.
“It’s still irresponsible,” Higgins said. “It’s not the image of a student athlete I’d like to portray. Whatever they want me to do, I’ll do.”
