Pioneer lacrosse finishes 7th, preps for next season
By Cliff Gagas • May 8, 2008 • Category: SportsThe UW-Platteville Lacrosse Club ended its season on April 26 and 27 at the Great Lakes Lacrosse League Tournament in Madison.
Joe Nelson, team president, said the team’s regular season consisted of eight games that are played during the spring.
The club lost to UW-La Crosse and beat UW-River Falls to take the top spot in the regular season, Nelson said.
The top two teams go into the top tournament and the remaining teams go into the lower tournament bracket, Nelson said.
“The club placed seventh out of eight teams in the tournament,” James Bendickson, current club secretary and club president for next season, said. “It was a disappointment not to make it to the championship this year.”
“We would like to have done better as defending champs,” Nelson said.
The team will be losing around five players because of people graduating, Bendickson said. Last year the club lost 10 veteran players so the team this year was very young compared to past years.
People interested in joining the UW-P Lacrosse Club can call (608)-312-9240 and talk with James Bendickson or e-mail the club at uwp_lax@yahoo.com.
Also people interested in joining can contact the club with questions or find out more information on the UW-P Lacrosse Club’s Facebook group.
People who want to try playing in the club and don’t have any experience are more than encouraged to join, Bendickson said.
Nelson described the game as a simple game with 10 players on the field from each team at a time. The game is much like hockey but with a lot more control.
“Passing and catching is much like baseball,” Nelson said.
The club practices when school is in session and when the weather is bad, practices take place inside of Williams Fieldhouse, Nelson said.
“It is a pretty laid-back program,” Brent Beveroth, sophomore defender, said. “This was my first year playing for the UW-P lacrosse team.”
All the players on the team are helpful and willing to help anyone that is interested in joining, Bendickson said.
There are dues that cost $75 for the year or $50 a semester and that includes items such as practice jerseys and warm-up jerseys. The team will be starting up again in the fall and looks forward to another successful season.
