Chancellor David Markee, who had quintuple bypass surgery on March 28 is living at home and has been on the UW-Platteville campus.

“I’m feeling good,” Markee said. “Hopefully I’ll be back in full force in the fall.”

There is no set timetable for Markee to return to work full-time.

“It’ll be later in the summer,” Markee said. “You have to take a little time and let it come together as it needs to.”

“It’s great having him back,” Carol Sue Butts, provost and vice chancellor, said. “We’ve really missed him.”

Butts said that Markee’s return depends on how he heals and when he gets his strength back.

Markee wasn’t feeling well on March 26, so he saw his doctor and went to Madison for more tests March 27, Butts said. His surgery took place the next day.

“It’s a good thing he listened to his body,” Butts said.

Markee kept in contact with members of the administration through phone calls beginning a couple of weeks after his surgery, Butts said. A member of the administration speaks with him every day.

“He calls often, several times a week,” Butts said.

Markee’s first appearance on campus was on April 21, David Van Buren, associate vice chancellor and dean of graduate studies, said. Markee also attended the chancellor’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning and the Student Leadership Awards on April 25.

“This was a major assault on the body, very intrusive,” Butts said. “It’s about building his strength.”

Van Buren said Markee is in good spirits and upbeat.

“He’s anxious to be back around,” Van Buren said.

Barb Daus, special assistant to the chancellor, said that Markee is receiving documents from the university for review and is participating in analysis and decision-making.

“LouAnn and I both appreciate the kind words and cards we’ve received,” Markee said.
