The debate I keep hearing about involves guns on campus and there are strong points on both sides of the issue. Instead of focusing on guns, I wanted to know what the University’s policy on school shootings are, how to deal with a potential unstable student and also how to react to a shooting event.
I was really dismayed at finding out that there is not a policy out there besides warning people through the internet and letting the law enforcement handle it. I spoke to a few professors and they were not aware of any policy coming from the university. Some professors have their own opinion of what should be done but I only know of one professor that actually told his class about how he wants the class to react if they hear gun shots or see a shooter.
The law enforcement can only do so much and they were on the scene at the Columbine, VA Tech and NIU shootings. It is disappointing to learn that even after all those events, this school is not prepared to deal with this situation.
