The UW-Platteville women’s rugby club hosted teams from all over the Midwest for its annual Mudfest tournament. The team played two games at Miners Field on April 5 and split on the day.

The Pioneers came out and played well against the Badgers of UW-Madison and won the game convincingly 17-0. The team did well to score three early tries in the first 10 minutes of the match to take a commanding lead that they would never turn back from. The team did well to protect the ball in the rucks and dominated a good Madison team in the scrums.

“Our rucks and scrums were just as we practiced if not better,” women’s rugby club president Sandy Raczynski said.

The team did well to impose a little Platteville power to push back an equally talented Madison squad. The back line helped the team to make several good runs and good passing was exhibited throughout the entire match. The Pioneers played excellent defense to hold Madison to no tries and set the pace for the entire day.

The ladies second match was against Winona State and the Pioneers struggled and came out on the short end of the stick losing 22-12. Whitney Stevenson scored two tries for the Pioneers. Conditioning was a factor for the UW-P as the Warriors played well and came out victorious against the Pioneers.

The team played well for the tournament, which was won by UW-Milwaukee and the ladies head to UW-Eau Claire on April 12 to play in the Iron Women Tourament.
