UW-P accepting athletic HOF nominations
By Cliff Gagas • March 13, 2008 • Category: NewsThe UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame committee is accepting nominations for people who have outstanding past or current coaching performances for 15 or more years, or outstanding performance in intercollegiate athletics with a graduation date 15 or more years previous to the current year.
John Krogman, associate vice-chancellor for information services and chair of the hall of fame committee, said anyone could be nominated as long as they meet the criteria. Candidates for induction either have to be a student athlete who graduated 15 or more years ago with documented performance, outstanding past or current coaching performance for 15 or more years or the nominee must have an outstanding service to UW-P, Krogman said.
Paul Erickson, sports information director, said a person who wants to nominate someone, can fill the form out either on the UW-P athletics’ Web site or pick up a form.
Krogman said the deadline for nominations with supporting documentations is Friday, March 28.
The committee is a mixture of different people that includes six UW-P staff members, elected alumni members and elected area citizen members. Most of the people on the committee have both been nominated for the hall of fame and won or former students who have graduated, Krogman said.
Krogman said each year the committee has to consider numerous candidates that meet the criteria. The committee can only pick seven nominees that can be inducted into the hall of fame.
Jerry Schliem, 1992 hall of fame inductee and hall of fame board member said, it can take a nominee two or three years before they are inducted into the hall of fame because the seven candidates must have majority of the votes from the committee members.
The process to pick the nominees is a long process and in-depth.
Erickson said once the candidates for the hall of fame have been picked, they are notified right away so the candidates find out directly from the committee instead of hearing it from someone else.
The UW-P Athletic Hall of Fame committee has never had a problem getting candidates, Krogman said. There are numerous athletes, coaches and other people who have done outstanding services to UW-P.
“We’ve had a lot of good history here at Platteville,” Erickson said.
There have been outstanding people every year who help and it will continue to get harder to pick people for the hall of fame, Erickson said.
“It’s quite an honor to be in the hall of fame,” Schliem said. “Being inducted into the hall of fame shows that all the work you did paid off.”
Erickson said shortly after the nominees are picked they are notified and honored on the weekend during a football game or basketball game.
There is a nice ceremony and a brunch on the day that the induction takes place. Speakers like former coaches, players and accomplished people will come and speak on behalf of the inductee, Schliem said.
The committee’s selection meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, Krogman said.
If people would like to nominate someone who meets the criteria, they can go to uwplatt.edu/athletics/hall.html for more information.
