Track prepares for Nationals

The UW-Platteville track team showed off their stuff on Feb. 29-March 1 at the WIAC indoor meet. The men finished in fourth place while the women’s team secured a sixth place finish in the very competitive WIAC.

UW-Platteville athletes Tyler Sigl, Tim Dahms and Nick Fulton turn the corner during a recent practice. The Pioneers are preparing for the end of the indoor season and the beginning of the outdoor season which starts on March 28 in St. Louis.

Among the Pioneers leading the way on this day were seniors Tyler Sigl and Marcia Taddy. Sigl took first place in the mile race and finished second in the 5,000 meter race. Taddy who just regained another season’s eligibility and promptly took first in the 800 meter and mile races. Both Sigl and Taddy qualified for Nationals along with several other Pioneers.

Also winning on the day for the Pioneers were junior pole vaulter Scott Howard who became the first Pioneer in over 15 years to win the pole vault at the indoor meet. The Pioneers also had second place finishes from two relay teams who were named all-conference after their performances.

Other UW-P athletes who finished high on the medal stand on the day were Jessica Scott who finished just behind Taddy in the 800 meters. Another Pioneer finishing just behind Taddy was Emma Dreis who came in third in the mile.

A rash of Pioneer men finished near the top of the their respective competitions with Corey Digman taking second in the weight throw and third in the shot put. Tony Kilburg finished third in the 800 matching Ben Zizis who took third in the 55 meter hurdles. Another Pioneer relay team finished well as the Pioneers were able to secure a third place finish in 4 x 400 meter relay.

UW-P was also honored with Coach Jim Nickasch who was named the men’s co-coach of the year and Marcia Taddy was named the co-performer of the meet.

The Pioneers will head to Ada, Ohio on March 7-8 for the Div. III National Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University. The Pioneers hope to finish as well as they did last year during the outdoor season when the men finished in fourth place and the women finished fifth.
