The UW-Platteville Center for the Arts hosted The Bachelors March 1-2. The musical, which was part of the Performing Art Series, was held in the Brodbeck Concert Hall.

The Bachelors was produced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and was brought in because of its high quality and Wisconsin ties. John Hassig, CFA Director of Performing and Visual Arts said. The story was written by Fred Alley and James Kaplan and is part of a trilogy of musicals that involve men in an adolescent stage.

It takes place in Madison in a cave-like apartment where two bachelors reside. All of the typical signs of two men living together are apparent with dirty dishes, a fridge only filled with mystery food and beer, and the use of odd objects such as a sock for a coffee filter.

“I really liked how the play was set in Wisconsin, and the good use of props such as the Packers clothes that were used throughout the musical,” Robert Engel, a sophomore Reclamation major, said.

The two bachelors, John and Stew, find their friendship threatened when a pizza delivery woman named Kate, who is actually someone they both wronged in a previous life, appears. Throughout the musical she tries to get revenge on the two bachelors by splitting the friendship up. John falls in love and Stew is left as the third wheel. After a near fatal incident with old tuna, true love between Kate and John, and the friendship of Stew and John become re-established.

“The play was above average, and I liked it a lot,” Jason Yogerst, a freshman, said.

This musical is comical and humorous for all ages. With its amusing look into a bachelor’s life, it not only gave audience members a look at the dangers of relationships and commitment, but a strong message of friendship and love.

The Bachelors was funded by the Brodbeck theatre fund, SUFAC and the Wisconsin Arts Board. For more information about the shows featured in the Performing Art Series and other CFA shows, visit uwplatt.edu/arts/cfa or stop in by the Box Office in the lobby of the CFA.
