Intramurals offer good times
By Steve Jorgensen • February 21, 2008 • Category: SportsEach year many students participate in intramural sports on campus. UW-Platteville’s intramurals director Curt Fatzinger said intramural sports are a great way for students to get more involved with their campus.
Fatzinger said that intramural sports are a great way to meet new people. He said that in the past there have been more than 3,000 participants involved in basketball, broom ball, dodge ball, football, indoor soccer, racquetball and water polo.
Don Katzer, a senior physical education major, has participated in basketball and football and currently supervises indoor soccer on Sundays and is a referee for basketball and water polo on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He says that the winter sports are going great and everyone is getting along. The teams are competitive, social and they are making the games fun, Katzer said.
Eric Zoglman, a sophomore civil engineering major, has participated in indoor soccer, basketball, water polo and football.
“[Those sports] are fun and good, except sometimes the refs annoy me, but I guess that’s normal,” Zoglman said.
Although basketball, broom ball, indoor soccer, racquetball and water polo are already in season, according to UW-P’s intramurals Web page, football and dodge ball will have registration meetings at 7 and 8 p.m. on March 12.
Katzer said that the best part of intramural sports is the fact that students are getting out and being active while being competitive and having fun.
“They will help you lose all those pounds one gains from Glenview [Commons],” Zoglman said.
Fatzinger said that joining an intramural sport is a great way to relieve stress and the schedules are tailored to the student’s schedules. Each team only plays one game a week, so each team would get together and find out the best time for them to play.
If one is unsure whether or not to join an intramural sport, Fatzinger encourages students to join. As stated before, it is a great way to meet new people and you can stay in shape. Fatzinger also said that since there are different levels, students don’t have to be good at whatever sport you join.
“The only thing you have to lose is a few pounds and maybe some study time,” Katzer said.
