Sofia Carlos-Cuellar, a UW-Platteville lecturer, remains in the hospital after she was involved in a two-car collision on Feb. 4.
“As of Monday morning, we received an e-mail that she had severe head trauma and is still unconscious,” Carol Sue Butts, vice chancellor, said. “She is in critical, but stable condition.”
On Feb. 7, Carlos-Cuellar’s sister, Anita Hemingway, posted on the UW Health’s CarePage Web site that she was being sedated and in a Feb. 10 posting, stated that she still remains unconscious.
“We are working with faculty in the department on an overload basis to cover her classes while she is gone,” Rich Shultz, Dean of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science, said.
“We are unsure of her return based on her current condition,” Kelly Steiger, program assistant for the Department of Chemistry and Engineering Physics, said.
“This is very tragic. The whole university community is concerned about her,” Butts said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Sofia and her family.”
The Department of Chemistry and Engineering Physics is working with the Student Organization of Latinos to organize a fund for Carlos-Cuellar and her family, Tim Zauche, associate professor of chemistry, said.
Any contributions can be sent to Steiger at the Department of Chemistry and Engineering Physics, Zauche said. Checks can be made out to the Lutheran Church of Peace Attn: Sofia. The Lutheran Church of Peace is located at 1345 N. Water St. in Platteville.
Carlos-Cuellar’s family is grateful for the support offered by her colleagues, students and friends.
“I’d like to say thank you for all the support and prayers we have received,” her husband, Ramon Cuellar, said. “It has given us comfort in this time of suffering.”
She has been a lecturer for the department since 2004.
