UW-P professor hurt in two car collision

UW-Platteville faculty member Sofia Carlos-Cuellar was injured in a traffic collision at approximately 7:05 a.m. on Feb. 4 according to a Wisconsin State Patrol Press Release. Carlos-Cuellar is a lecturer of general chemistry for the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science.
According to the State Patrol Press Release, Carlos-Cuellar was northbound on State Highway 80 when she lost control of her vehicle and crossed into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by James Schweigert of Cuba City.
Both drivers were transported to Southwest Health Center, Carlos-Cuellar with life threatening injuries. The State Patrol press release said that it was unclear whether Carlos-Cuellar was wearing a seatbelt or not.
Rich Schultz, dean of the college of EMS, said that Carlos-Cuellar was transported from SWHC to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, At the time this issue went to press, she was listed in stable condition, Caitlin Girdley, a nurse at UW-Hospital said.
Schultz said that the campus would work with existing faculty to take care of her students.
“The most important thing is to make sure that [Carlos-Cuellar] and her family are taken care of,” Schultz said. “But we will make sure her students are taken care of.”
Schultz was unsure how long Carlos-Cullear would be unable to teach, but said that the chair of her department, Charles Cornett, was developing a plan for her classes to be covered.
