Nothing says musical like a trailer park

The UW-Platteville Center for the Arts will be hosting “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 10. The musical, which is part of the CFA’s Performing Arts Series, will be held in the Brodbeck Concert Hall.
“The Great American Trailer Park Musical” is a new off-Broadway show portraying life at Florida’s most exclusive Trailer Park, Armadillo Acres. The musical is touring 35 cities across the country along with its stop at UW-P.
“The musical is not your traditional musical at all,” John Hassig, CFA director of Performing and Visual Arts, said. There are all types of music in this particular show and it is definitely a treat.
“The Great American Trailer Park Musical” comes from the agency Off-Broadway Booking, a company started three years ago in New York City by Orin Wolf, the owner of the booking company said. We then provide musicals to smaller markets and universities with a staff of five people.
The musical was written by Betsy Kelso and revolves around the regular guy, Norbert, and his agoraphobic wife Jeannie, whose 20-year marriage is threatened by Armadillo Acre’s newcomer, the hot young stripper, Pippi.
The Segregated University Fee Allocation Comission, the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Brodbeck Theatre Fund provided the financial backing to bring the show to UW-P.
It is suggested for mature audiences only, and in the end, students who walk away from the show will find that the musical has an underlying message of friendship, Hassig said.
A New York Sun review said the musical was “Southpark meets Desperate Housewives.”
Tianna Conway, a manager of the box office at UW-P, said that tickets for this event are $28 for general admission, $26 for faculty and senior citizens, $20 for children under 18 and $14 for UW-P students who have their student ID.
Tickets are available through the University Box Office in Ullsvik Hall. The box office is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached by calling 608-342-1298. Tickets are also now available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week at tickets.uwplatt.edu.
