Group works to raise AIDS Day awareness
By Adam Jenson • December 6, 2007 • Category: FeaturesThere was a hidden message in the “Do you see Orange” event held by InterVarsity last Thursday. The group wanted to show that one out of every twenty children in Africa is an orphan because of AIDS.
“Our goal for this semester was to raise money and awareness about AIDS in Africa,” Ben Belton, InterVarsity member, said.
During this event they were selling orange T-shirts with the word orphan printed on the front of them. InterVarsity also handed out small pamphlets with different stories about children on how
AIDS has affected their lives.
All of their proceeds went to the World Vision organization, one of the largest Christian relief organizations in the United States. InterVarsity decided to hold another event after the success of their bean bag tournament earlier in the semester.
Another goal for “Do you see Orange” was to help bring awareness about World AIDS Day, which was Dec. 1. The day is meant to help raise awareness about the world’s AIDS pandemic.
“We wanted to spark interest around campus and help people learn more about AIDS,” David Hoadley, InterVarsity member, said.
This was the last event for InterVarsity for the semester. There are no plans for a similar event in the future, but that could change, Belton said.
“Even though we did not sell all the T-shirts, we are getting word out and that is one of our main goals,” Andrea Peck, InterVarsity member, said.
