Career center to offer job search advice

The Career Center will host Job Search Boot Camp from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, in the University South Room to help give students the skills they need to conduct a successful job search.

Career consultant Jennifer Little of the Career Center will present the program. This will be the first time she will lead this event.

The two hour workshop will be divided into two parts. The first hour will focus on written job search materials such as résumés, correspondence letters and thank-you notes. Little suggests that students bring a copy of their résumé if they would like them reviewed individually or as a group.

The second hour will be spent discussing the job interview process. The workshop is just one of many opportunities students have to gain job search skills, such as interviewing from the Career Center. Little wants students to know that the Career Center also has mock interviews and interview recording so a student can critique his or her own interview.

The workshop is open to all UW-Platteville students at no cost.

“It can really benefit those looking for an internship or new graduates,” Career Center Interim Director Diana Trendt said. “We like to work with students from their freshman year through their senior year.”

“We want to make sure we are meeting the needs of anyone who is job searching,” Little said. She stresses that the skills learned can be applied to any student and the skills will always be valuable in the future.

“You do not want to be going out into the real world and making mistakes,” George Krueger, local businessman and lecturer for professional development classes at UW-P said. He stresses that practice and experience makes a difference for students entering the job market who want to be competitive.

This workshop was started last year by Trendt. She was pleased with the success and the event has continued every semester since that time.

Pre-registration for the event is requested. Students can pre-register by contacting the Career Center at 342-1183 or by going to the Career Center office on the first floor of the
Karrmann Library. Students who do not pre-register may still show up at the event depending on available space.

“We do not want students to miss out on great career opportunities,” Trendt said.
