Friend-making event success with small crowd
By Holly Ann Garey • November 15, 2007 • Category: FeaturesFewer than ten people showed up for a CPR-sponsored event meant to spawn friendships instead of relationships.
The first Quick Friends event was Oct. 24. QF is different from Speed Dating because it allows people to become friends instead of develop a romantic relationship.
At the start of the event, CPR Pioneer Adventures manager Toia Mannery estimated 50 to 70 people would come to the event, which was planned by a team of CPR event managers.
While the event didn’t hit those numbers of people, Mannery was pleased with the turn out.
“It was nice and comfortable,” Mannery said. “No one seemed to be uncomfortable with each other.”
A brief introduction was given, followed by Mannery pulling topic questions out of a plastic bag. Questions ranged from what was your favorite childhood memory to what is your favorite movie.
Mannery said that CPR could learn from this small group experience and try something like it again, but maybe with a few changes.
“It was fun and different,” Daniel Wahlert, junior mechanical engineering major, said. “It gave me something to do instead of sitting in my room.”
“It was interesting what you find out about people,” Morgan Leider, senior computer science major, said.
CPR sponsors a similar event called Speed Dating, where men and women have a brief conversation with each other and exchange numbers at the end of each segment if they choose, Mannery said. The next Speed Dating event will be held next semester.
